What is data processing?

Data processing is the carrying out of operations on data, typically by a computer which is either trying to retrieve, transfer, or classify information.

Typically data processing is carried out by programs that are capable of organising and manipulating typically large amounts of data.

The functions of data processing may involve processes such as validation to ensure that the supplied data is correct and relevant. Sorting, so arranging items in some sort of sequence or in different sets.

Summarisation is designed to reduce detailed data to its main points while aggregation is the process of combining multiple pieces of data.
