Formerly based in New York, Gawker was the flagship blog for Gawker Media. It focused mainly on celebrities and the media industry.

The site’s slogan was ‘today’s gossip is tomorrow’s news’.

It was founded by Nick Denton and Elizabeth Spiers in 2002. Denton remained the CEO.

Denton announced in 2015 that the site was to switch from covering New York and the media industry to a primary focus on politics.
