Hotmail was well-known in its day as a hot-bed for spammers, with many criticising the service for the amount of junk mail, chain mail and unwanted marketing which arrived in users’ inboxes.
The service came under fire yet again after a 2013 Guardian investigation revealed that Microsoft had allegedly allowed the National Security Agency (NSA) access to chats and emails on Outlook.com. Microsoft responded to the news by saying that ” there are aspects of this debate that we wish we were able to discuss more freely”.
