What is metadata?


Metadata is data about data.

Metadata consists of the key properties of a piece of data such as its context, but not its content.

In the digital age, digital communications and content are all associated with large amounts of often automatically recorded metadata.

This can include the author, date created, date modified and file size of a computer document.
