Sprint’s earliest origins are with the Brown Telephone Company, first founded in 1899 to connect the rural area around Abilene, Kansas. The brand Sprint comes from 1983 when SPC and GTE merged under the name “GTE Sprint”.
In 2005, Sprint merged with Nextel Communications, becoming known as Sprint Nextel Corporation. The two were respectively the third and fifth largest mobile operators in the US.
In 2013, Japanese telecoms company SoftBank acquired 70 percent of the combined Sprint-Nextel, with Sprint remaining as a separate brand.
